The Easter Island Statues Walked. The Evidence Has Been There the Whole Time.

For decades, the question of how the moai were moved across Rapa Nui seemed unanswerable. A 2012 experiment, confirmed by subsequent research, demonstrated that the answer was hiding in plain sight — in the oral traditions of the island's own people.

The moai of Rapa Nui — Easter Island — are among the most recognisable archaeological objects in the world. There are 1,000 of them, carved from volcanic tuff at a single quarry called Rano Raraku, and distributed across the island at distances of up to 18 kilometres from where they were made. The largest standing moai weighs 82 tonnes. The question of how a pre-industrial society moved them has generated more theories, more speculation, and more confident wrong answers than almost any other archaeological puzzle.

The oral tradition of the Rapa Nui people has always maintained that the moai walked to their platforms. This was generally treated by Western researchers as mythology — a poetic explanation for a process that must have involved sledges, rollers, or some other mechanical system. In 2012, archaeologists Carl Lipo and Terry Hunt, working with a team of Rapa Nui community members, tested the walking hypothesis directly.

The experiment involved a replica moai weighing approximately five tonnes and three teams of people using ropes. Two teams held ropes attached to the statue's sides, rocking it from side to side, while a third team used a rope at the back to control its forward lean. The statue moved forward in a waddling motion — walking. A team of 18 people moved the replica at a rate of approximately 100 metres per hour. The technique required no sledges, no rollers, and no large workforce. It required only ropes and coordination.

The physical evidence supports the walking hypothesis. The roads connecting Rano Raraku to the coastal platforms are narrow — too narrow for the wide sledge systems that had previously been proposed. The moai found abandoned along these roads are standing upright, not lying flat as they would be if they had been transported horizontally. And the bases of the moai are shaped in a way that facilitates the rocking motion required for walking — a design feature that would be unnecessary if they were moved lying down.

The walking hypothesis does not resolve all the questions about Rapa Nui. The largest moai — some weighing over 80 tonnes — would have required considerably more people and more sophisticated rope management than the five-tonne replica used in the 2012 experiment. Whether the technique scales to the largest statues remains an open question.

What the research does establish is that the Rapa Nui people's own account of how the moai were moved was correct, and that Western researchers spent decades dismissing it as myth when it was, in fact, accurate technical knowledge preserved in oral tradition. The moai walked. The people who made them always said so.
